How Do You Get Thrush?

Our bodies are amazing. They have hundreds and thousands of tasks going on at once. One of the important tasks is to keep the balance of the body.

Bacteria and yeast co-exist in our bodies. Each has a role to play every day to help our bodies work.

For example, a type of bacteria is in women's vaginas called lactobacillus. This bacteria's job is to maintain the pH of the vagina. pH is important to keep yeast from taking over. The lactobacillus is also supposed to protect the delicate tissue in our vaginas.

Yeast helps in our intestines by breaking down complex carbohydrates in our foods.

Most days no problems. Each job gets down and the body is in balance.

But sometimes the balance is disrupted. When that happens the bacteria can overgrow causing a bacterial infection or the yeast can overgrow causing a yeast infection or thrush.

The balance of the body can be easily upset by a variety of situations or conditions. Some of those are:

  • Antibiotics
  • Stressful life
  • Non-breathable clothing
  • Hormonal changes in a woman’s life: menstrual period, pregnancy, and menopause
  • Some diseases:
    • Diabetes
    • HIV
    • Asthma
